Going to the gym with your partner can be a fantastic way to spend quality time together while pursuing shared health goals. It provides mutual motivation, a built-in spotter, and a shared sense of accomplishment. However, the gym is a communal space, and what feels like a fun, romantic session for two can sometimes be a source of frustration for everyone else. Becoming 'that couple'—the one that unknowingly disrupts the flow and annoys other members—is a common pitfall. By following some simple etiquette, you can ensure your shared workouts are productive for you and respectful of others.

Respect the space and equipment of others

One of the most frequent complaints about couples in the gym revolves around monopolising equipment. It is important to remember that two people using one machine or area can effectively double the waiting time for others. Avoid circuit training across multiple machines in a busy gym, as this takes several stations out of commission simultaneously. If you plan to alternate sets on a single piece of equipment, be efficient and allow others to 'work in' between your sets, especially during peak hours. This simple courtesy shows awareness and consideration for fellow gym-goers who are also trying to complete their workouts.

Keep public displays of affection to a minimum

While your romantic connection is special, the weights area is not the ideal place for overt displays of affection. A supportive high-five or an encouraging word is perfectly acceptable, but prolonged kissing, cuddling between sets, or other intimate behaviour can make people around you feel uncomfortable. The gym is a functional environment focused on health and fitness, not a romantic date spot. Keep your interactions focused on the workout itself. Be mindful of your volume and conversation

Working out with a partner naturally involves communication, but it is crucial to be aware of your volume. Engaging in loud, extended conversations can be highly distracting to others who are trying to concentrate on their form or push through a difficult set. This applies to both chatter and loud grunting or shouting. Similarly, if one of you is acting as a coach for the other, keep the instructions encouraging but at a reasonable volume. You are sharing the space, so think of it like being in a library; your conversation should not disturb those around you who are in their own zone.

Avoid turning your workout into a photoshoot

Capturing progress photos or short videos can be a great motivational tool, but it should not interfere with the primary purpose of being at the gym. Constantly setting up a phone to film every set, posing for selfies in front of mirrors that others need to use, or blocking walkways to get the perfect shot can be disruptive. If you want to document your workout, be discreet and quick about it. Find a quiet corner or wait until the area you need is empty. Your fitness journey is inspiring, but it shouldn't get in the way of someone else's.

Work together, but also independently

There is no rule that says you have to do every single exercise together. A great way to be efficient and considerate is to split up for parts of your workout. Perhaps you can do your cardio warm-ups on adjacent machines, but when it comes to strength training, you might work on different equipment in the same general area. This allows you both to complete your individual programmes without hogging one station for an extended period. You can still offer support and motivation from a distance before regrouping for a final exercise or stretch.

Ultimately, working out as a couple should enhance your gym experience, not detract from it for others. The key is self-awareness. By being mindful of how your actions impact the shared environment, you can be a supportive partner and a considerate gym member at the same time.
